Watch Description

What makes the Canton 023 unique: Today, we’re pleased to showcase this sophisticated piece originally manufactured by the Hampden Watch Company in 1916 — the Canton 023. The antique watch boasts an elegant dial with a pristine white background, black hour numerals, and red minute numerals.

The timepiece also has a matching double-sunk dial and gorgeous blue spade hands. We paired the Hampden Watch Company’s original pocket watch with our robust and stylish Machined Titanium case and equipped it with a nickel-plated crown. Our Machined Titanium case features a transparent back, allowing you to view the pocket watch’s intricate and robust inner workings. It features a 307-grade open-face movement, a Hampden Star regulator, and a stunning parallel finish pattern. You can also see the watch’s robust and luxurious-looking gold-plated gears powered by 17 sumptuous screw-set jewels. Finally, we complemented the watch by pairing it with our artisan-crafted Stone leather watch strap.

The Hampden Watch Company initially produced the pocket watch in Canton, Ohio, in 1916 — the same year as the Petticoat Revolution. On December 5, 1916, seven women secretly ran for office in Umatilla, Oregon, and won. Lola and Robert Merrick came up with the idea after becoming increasingly disillusioned with Umatilla’s local government. They invited seven women to a card game and suggested that they should run for office secretly. Laura Stockton Starcher successfully won the mayoral election against her husband, E.E. Starcher, who was also the incumbent. The seven elected women implemented many reforms that improved the town’s infrastructure. Unfortunately, Starcher suffered from a nervous breakdown after eight months in office and resigned, but Stella Paulu, one of the women who won a city council seat, replaced her and served until 1920.

Movement Manufacturer Information

The movement inside of this watch was made by Hampden Watch Company. We call this model "The Canton" because the company was located in Canton, Ohio.

Although founded in 1877, Hampen's story truly begins after its purchase by John C. Dueber in 1886. Mr. Dueber was in the process of moving his Kentucky based watch case manufacturing company, and he ultimately decided to move both the case company and Hampden watch company to Canton, Ohio together. Housing both operations on one campus, Dueber was able to produce cases for their own watches, unlike any other watch company. These two companies together eventually formed the Dueber-Hampden Watch Company. The company thrived until the late 1920's when it hit financial trouble and eventually closed its doors. The original factory building is no longer standing.
