Watch Description

What makes the Boston 485 unique: Today we are very excited to bring you this incredibly unique watch from the American Waltham Watch Company, our Boston 485. We always love when we find these particular dials, the crisp clean white with stark roman numerals shows the age of the watch and gives it that classic look that we love to accentuate. The red Arabic numeral minute indicators around the outside are a lovely extra touch of detail and makes it all the more interesting. We achieve this case color on our sandblasted titanium case by baking it in the kiln for over an hour, and what comes out is a soft blue tone that we have really enjoyed being able to mix into the lineup of options. We went with our nickel-plated crown to give it some pop and matched the hardware as well. As we turn this watch over, we are delighted by the incredible detail that has been carefully machined all across this 3/4 build plate. 17 ruby jewels have been press-fit and screw-set with nickel hardware, while gold-plated gears can be seen underneath.

This watch was originally produced by the American Waltham Watch Company in Waltham, Massachusettes in 1925. In this same year, the first successful transatlantic telephone call was made between London and New York. This was a major milestone in the history of telecommunications and marked a new era of global communication. It was a remarkable achievement that brought people closer together and showed the world that anything is possible when we work together. This pioneering event is a reminder of the power of human ingenuity and the importance of collaboration in achieving great things.

Movement Manufacturer Information

The movement inside of this watch was made by Waltham Watch Company. We call this model "The Boston" because of the company's proximity to the city.

Also known as American Watch Company and American Waltham Watch Company, Waltham was one of the leaders in attempting an entirely new concept, machines making machines. Prior to this, a watchmaker would hand-make each part of a movement one-at-a-time. Operating from 1851-1957, Waltham called its product the "Scientific Watch." Waltham's innovative, precise machining techniques made parts interchangeable, and their early version of the assembly line made high-quality watches efficient to produce. Legend has it that Henry Ford drew inspiration for his assembly line production from a visit to Waltham's factory. Located on the bank of the Charles River in "Watch City" (Waltham), Massachusetts, the factory has since been converted to apartment lofts.
