Watch Description

What makes the Chicago 424 Unique: This watch is another shining example of the classic Elgin design we’ve come to know and love, which features bold, dark numerals and clean dials. For contrast, we added dark spade and whip hands, which complete the signature Elgin look that seems to last the test of time. We set this movement in our gunmetal titanium case and accented it with nickel-plated hardware. The stunning build place of the movement is adorned with a complex damaskeene pattern while the regulator sports a dark, inlaid floral pattern. 17 screw-set jewels and stainless steel hardware allow the gold-plated gears to stand out below the bridge. The classically simple design of the dial and the intricate complexity of the movement are what make this watch an incredible timepiece. This watch was manufactured by the Elgin National Watch Company in Elgin, Illinois in 1918. In the same year, the first pilotless drone was designed, built, and flown in Long Island, New York. The Hewitt-Sperry Automatic Airplane was a project designed by Elmer Sperry and Peter Cooper Hewitt. The project was later scrapped, as the control system proved to be unreliable.

Movement Manufacturer Information

The movement inside of this watch was made by Elgin Watch Company. We call this model "The Chicago" because of the company's proximity to the city.

Also known as Elgin National Watch Company, Elgin wasn't only the largest watch manufacturer in the United States, but the largest watch manufacturer in the world for almost 100 years, operating from 1864-1964. The company often used a depiction of father time on advertisements. At one point, the company was making 7,500 watch movements per week and had 2,300 employees. The factory was demolished in 1966 and replaced with a shopping center.
