Watch Description

What makes the Springfield 562 unique: We’re proud to present this special wristwatch that was originally produced by the Illinois Watch Company — the Springfield 562. This eye-catching watch features a cream-colored dial with distinct black numerals and a matching subdial. The piece also displays a subtle yet handsome light-gold-colored center design and blued-steel gothic watch hands that glimmer vividly against the dial. We paired this pocket watch with our stylish Gilded Titanium case and topped it off with a nickel-plated crown. Our Gilded Titanium case boasts an open back, enabling you to view the pocket watch’s 405-grade open-face movement with a Going barrel, nickel finish, and pendant setting. The movement’s center bridge plate features an exceptionally-stylish engraving that reads “The Autocrat,” and it boasts 17 striking jewels as well as gold-plated gears. To tie the piece together, we matched it with our hand-crafted Stout leather watch strap, making the final product even more fashionable.

The Illinois Watch Company originally manufactured the pocket watch in Springfield, Illinois, in 1922 — the same year that the USS Langley was recommissioned, making it the United States Navy’s first aircraft carrier. This carrier was originally the collier USS Jupiter — the Navy’s first turbo-electric-powered ship — and was converted into an aircraft carrier at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth, Virginia. The carrier was named after Samuel Pierpont Langley, an astronomer, physicist, inventor of the bolometer — a device measuring radiant heat — and the third secretary of the Smithsonian Institution.

Movement Manufacturer Information

The movement inside of this watch was made by Illinois Watch Company. We call this model "The Springfield" because the company was located in Springfield, Illinois.

Originally called the Springfield Watch Company, Illinois came to Springfield, Illinois in 1869 while the "modern" watch industry was fairly new but highly promising. City officials felt that the addition of industry to the city of Springfield would be excellent for the city's growth. However, after a series of failures and re-brandings, the company had a slow start until 1903 when they decided to manufacture high-quality watches only. Eventually making some of the most beautiful watches of their time, the company sold to Hamilton in 1927. Hamilton continued producing watches under the Illinois name for some time, but the original Springfield factory no longer stands.
