Watch Description

What makes the Springfield 585 unique: Today we are pleased to present to you this fabulous timepiece originally manufactured by the Illinois Watch Company in 1925. We love the look of this rustic dial with subtle aging marks that have occurred over time. This absolutely one-of-a-kind piece will grab your attention immediately and draw you in for a closer look at all the fine details. The pocket watch has been given a new life with the addition of a sandblasted titanium case, a nickel-plated crown, and a rye leather strap. The gold-plated gears inside are pronounced beautifully beneath this nickel-plated 3/4 bridge plate, creating a timeless and sophisticated look. This "Master" grade 405 movement from Illinois is also adorned with 17 stunning screw-set jewels throughout that will have you taking the watch off to show off everything inside.

This watch was initially produced in Springfield, Illinois by the Illinois Watch company in 1925. Also in 1925, The Scopes Trial, also known as the Scopes Monkey Trial, was a landmark legal case that tested the constitutionality of a Tennessee law prohibiting the teaching of evolution in public schools. The trial pitted two of the most famous legal minds of the time against each other—prosecutor William Jennings Bryan and defense attorney Clarence Darrow. The case ultimately reached the Supreme Court, which ruled that the law was constitutional, but the trial itself was a major media event that brought the debate over the teaching of evolution into the public eye.

Movement Manufacturer Information

The movement inside of this watch was made by Illinois Watch Company. We call this model "The Springfield" because the company was located in Springfield, Illinois.

Originally called the Springfield Watch Company, Illinois came to Springfield, Illinois in 1869 while the "modern" watch industry was fairly new but highly promising. City officials felt that the addition of industry to the city of Springfield would be excellent for the city's growth. However, after a series of failures and re-brandings, the company had a slow start until 1903 when they decided to manufacture high-quality watches only. Eventually making some of the most beautiful watches of their time, the company sold to Hamilton in 1927. Hamilton continued producing watches under the Illinois name for some time, but the original Springfield factory no longer stands.
